The Asia-Pacific comprises four regions – North Asia (not
including countries of the Former Soviet Union), South Asia and South
East Asia along with Australasia.
There are
sixteen countries in Asia and four in Australasia that produce or have
produced oil, condensate, natural gas liquids and/or natural gas at
recorded and measurable levels. These now include Timor Leste, which began
producing condensate in 2004 in a joint development with Australia; and
South Korea, which began producing gas in late 2003.
One further country (Cambodia) is believed to have the
potential to produce oil in the short term and gas in the longer term.
Indonesia was the only OPEC member in the region but this country has now become a net oil importer
and has ceased its membership.
