MIDDLE EAST
Four areas are included in this region - North West Africa, West Africa,
South East Africa and the Middle East.
There are thirty seven countries in the region that produce or have
produced oil, condensate, natural gas liquids and/or natural gas at
recorded and measurable levels. Of these twenty three are in Africa and
thirteen are in
the Middle East, including Turkey and Israel with Palestine, counted as
one.
Madagascar began producing oil in 2008. Two further countries in Africa (Uganda and São Tomé &
Príncipe) have
the potential to produce oil in the short term and gas in the longer term.
The region has nine OPEC members, six in the Middle East and three in Africa. These
countries, combined with new oil output that is being progressively
realised from deep waters off West Africa, are hugely important for meeting
global oil and gas demand.
