On the west and south of the Koreas, where the
countries abut the Yellow Sea and East China Sea respectively, drilling
has been conducted since 1969 by a series of operators.
In South Korea the Korea Petroleum Exploration and
Development Company (PEDCO) located a series of sub-commercial gas
fields in 1987 to 1990 (Dolgorae) near the Japanese border and then
later found the commercial Donghae-1 gas field in 1998 off the
southeastern city of Ulsan with reserves of around 6.8 Bcm.
The Korea National Oil Company (KNOC) built production
facilities for Donghae gas to be used in Ulsan and South Kyongsang
Province, bringing the field into production in November 2003.
