SURINAM

South America

The Guyana Basin, a passive margin basin similar to the basins along Brazil’s northern coast, underlies Guyana, Surinam and French Guiana.

Oil is being produced from one field (Tambaredjo) on the southern edge of the basin onshore Surinam. Some exploration has been carried out along the shelf to examine the potential for turbidite reservoirs.

The national oil companies of Surinam (Staatsolie), as well as those of Guyana and Guyane (previously French Guiana) are encouraging exploration by foreign companies.
