Central America
Guatemala produces oil from a number of onshore fields in
two regions within the centrally located Peten basin.
 Over half the current output is from the Xan field, which
produces heavy oil. The Peten area has seen considerable exploration in
the hope that similarities with Mexico would materialise.
Offshore exploration is almost non-existent, especially
since the Guatemalan Caribbean coastline is very short.
