SUPPLY
Gas production began in 2004 from the Songo Songo field,
which lies partly on and partly offshore. The area is a regional high
and there are few further prospects for adding gas output except in
adjacent structures, especially offshore. These will maintain output at
least to 2018
Tanzania began producing minor NGLs with its gas in 2004 but has not
achieved any oil production. It may have some prospects in deep waters
but no oil production is forecast.
DEMAND
Oil consumption in Tanzania has been flat since 2006 and
is expected to remain so. The commencement of gas production in 2004 has
led to a big increase in gas consumption for electricity generation,
allowing the country to divert oil into the transport sector.
All oil is imported and there is, as yet, insufficient gas to develop an
export market.
