Drilling in Tanzania in basins of a similar type to Mozambique has been generally unsuccessful however one large on/offshore gas field (Songo Songo) and one small offshore gas field (Mnazi Bay) have been discovered.

Songo Songo has possible reserves of 30 Bcm. A Canadian joint venture is developing the field on Songo Songo Island south of Dar es Salaam, installing two 0.36 Bcm per year processing units and a 232 km pipeline to Ubungo Dar es Salaam for electricity generation. The minimal hydrocarbon liquids removed is consumed on site as fuel. Around one quarter of the gas originates from offshore wells.

Songo Songo is the first field to provide an indigenous energy source for Tanzania and the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) is keen to encourage further shallow and deep water exploration.

Although it is unlikely that oil accumulations will be located some further gas pools are possible to briefly delay overall declines from the current and planned developments.
