MOROCCO
North West Africa
The Tarfaya, Essaouira and Rharb basins of Morocco
underlie shallow and deep waters and minor amounts of oil and gas have been
produced onshore from the Essaouira and Rharb basins.
However, despite several exploration campaigns onshore
and offshore, significant accumulations have never been encountered.
Offshore exploration began in the 1960s when Exxon drilled 9 wells, some
with oil shows in Jurassic carbonates.
Since then around 30 wells have been drilled. In the late
1990s a number of companies acquired reconnaissance permits and The
Office National de Recherches et d’Exploitations - Onarep, the state oil
company, improved its Hydrocarbon Law to encourage further exploration.
Vanco spudded the first deepwater well in Morocco in 2004 and Petronas
has converted its reconnaissance permit into a deepwater licence.
