BENIN

West Africa

Benin has a narrow offshore region underlain by the Benin basin. There is a small shallow water oil field on the east of the country.

The Seme field, discovered in 1967/8, began producing relatively heavy crude (22° API) in 1982 and is now Benin’s only producing field. Reserves, originally assessed at 100 mm Bbls, have been sharply reduced. Other areas are being explored although prospects are limited.
